NSW: Five die in four separate crashes on NSW roads

SYDNEY, Aug 14 AAP - Five people were dead following a horror night on NSW roads.

Among the victims were two teenagers killed when a car hit a tree near Taree, and anelderly man left to die after being struck by a hit and run driver on the NSW south coast,police said.

Two teenage passengers, a 17-year-old girl from New Mexico in the United States anda Taree man, 18, were killed instantly when a car hit a tree near Taree, on the mid-northcoast, at 8.30pm (AEST) last night.

The driver, an 18-year-old man from Wingham and the front seat passenger, a 16-year-oldTaree girl, were taken to Manning Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Meanwhile in the state's central west, a truck driver was killed early this morningwhen his vehicle hit a bridge on the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange.

Police said the accident, at Dunkeld, closed the Mitchell Highway in both directionsand traffic was expected to be diverted along the Mid Western Highway through Blayneyfor several hours.

On the south coast, a 71-year-old man from Fairfield in Sydney died after being struckby a car at Sanctuary Point at 6.30pm (AEST) last night.

Police said the man was hit by what witnesses believed was an early 1980s model maroonHolden Commodore sedan, which failed to stop following the crash.

A nearby doctor was called to the scene but the man died from his injuries.

An accident claimed the life of another pedestrian in Sydney last night.

An 18-year-old Bringelly man died after being hit by a Holden Rodeo utility while walkingwith a friend at Rossmore, in the city's south-west, at 7pm (AEST).

Police said the seriously injured man was taken to Liverpool Hospital but could notbe revived. His companion, a 17-year-old Rossmore girl, was taken to hospital with minorinjuries.

The 57-year-old driver of the utility spoke to crash investigators at the scene butwill be formally interviewed later today.
