FED: Treasury boss says budget will be in surplus

CANBERRA, Feb 8 AAP - The next federal budget would have a less contractionary impact
on the Australian economy than last year's budget, Treasury Secretary Ted Evans said today.

Mr Evans told a Senate committee hearing the budget for 2000-01 would be in surplus.

"We would see next year's budget as providing less contraction to the economy than
this year's," he said.

He said he had used the term less contractionary rather than more stimulatory because
both the 1999-00 and 2000-01 budgets were in surplus.
