NSW: Army engineer to assess federal hail storm assistance
SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - A senior army engineer will inspect Sydney's hail storm damaged
areas tomorrow to determine the level of Commonwealth assistance needed for the clean up.
The engineer would assess what resources were needed in the longer term to secure damaged
properties, Emergency Services Minister Bob Debus said in a statement tonight.
The engineer would make the assessment on behalf of Emergency Management Australia, which
co-ordinates Commonwealth assistance in emergency situations, Mr Debus said.
"Temporary repairs to damaged properties will require ongoing maintenance to ensure they
last until more permanent repairs are completed," Mr Debus said.
"While we have been able to rely on state resources until now, State Emergency Service
Director General Hori Howard has advised that additional help may be required in this next
phase of the operation".
It was expected the assessment would be forwarded to the State Recovery Coordinating
Committee head, Dr Col Gellatly, by tomorrow afternoon, Mr Debus said.
