Fed: Ferries a soft target says security expert

An American security specialist says Sydney's ferries are a soft terrorist target ..

presenting an opportunity for enormous disaster.

MALCOLM NANCE is a 20-year veteran of the US intelligence service.

He's told the Australian Security Industry Association conference .. ferries on Sydney
Harbour are vulnerable.

Mr NANCE says a simultaneous attack on several ferries could be an enormous disaster
.. and the city needs to plan for such an attack.

Australia's security chief PAUL O'SULLIVAN agrees soft targets make Australia as vulnerable
as anywhere else in the world.

The director general of ASIO says Australia has no guarantee of preventing a handful
of committed terrorists from causing mayhem.





A Sydney Ferries spokesman has confirmed CCTV cameras have been in place on every wharf
since before the 2000 Olympics .. and are soon to undergo a 5.5 million dollar upgrade.

The system's also part of the state government's .. See Something .. Say Something
.. awareness campaign.
